Must you take the civic exam to renew your residence permit?

Renewing an already obtained CSP or resident card generally does not require the civic exam. Here are the rules and special cases.

Must you take the civic exam to renew your residence permit?

Renewing your residence permit and wondering if the civic exam is required again? This is one of the most common questions since the obligation took effect on January 1, 2026.

This article answers directly and clarifies differences between renewal, first application, and status change.

Difference between first application and renewal

The civic exam targets first applications for certain long-term permits (multi-year residence permit, resident card), not simple renewal of an already issued permit.

The general framework is in our 2026 civic exam article and on Service-Public.

Multi-year residence permit renewal

If you renew an already obtained multi-year residence permit, you do not need to retake the civic exam, even if your first issuance was before 2026.

For a first CSP application, the exam may be required: see civic exam for CSP.

Resident card renewal

Same rule for the resident card: renewing an already obtained permit is not subject to the civic exam obligation.

For a first CR application, see civic exam for resident card.

Watch for status change or first application for another permit

The situation changes if you are not simply renewing the same permit but applying for the first time for another status — for example a first resident card after a multi-year permit.

In that case, you may be subject to the civic exam like any first application for the target permit.

What if the prefecture requests proof?

If in doubt, check documents requested on your summons or contact your prefecture. If you already have a pass certificate from a previous procedure, it may remain valid depending on your situation.

The certificate has no official expiry date but must match the exam category for your procedure.

Why preparation can still be useful

Even if you renew without an exam obligation, you may want to revise for a future procedure (naturalization, permit change). Civic preparation still helps consolidate your knowledge.

If your goal changes, see how to prepare for the civic exam.

Choose the right path before training

If you are simply renewing an already obtained permit, you are generally not subject to the civic exam. However, if your procedure changes — for example a first resident card application after a multi-year permit — it is useful to verify your situation and choose the matching path in Alice.

Alice offers adapted paths: multi-year permit, resident card, or naturalization. The app is not an official service.

For exemptions, also see who is not concerned and where to take the exam.

Frequently asked questions

Must I take the exam if I renew my CSP?
No. Renewing an already obtained multi-year residence permit is not affected.
Must I take the exam if I renew my resident card?
No. Renewing an already obtained resident card does not require retaking the civic exam.
What if I apply for a resident card after a CSP?
A first resident card application may be subject to the civic exam, even if you already had a CSP. This is not a simple renewal.
Does the pass certificate expire?
The pass certificate has no official expiry date. It must be attached to the dossier at the time of the relevant application.

In short: renewing an already obtained permit does not require the civic exam. For status changes or first applications for a new permit, verify your obligations with official sources.
